Corowa and the Rutherglen Wine Region

Corowa is a prosperous country town with a population of near 6000. Located on the Murray River, Corowa is 600 km south west of Sydney via the Hume Highway. Lake Mulwala and the Rutherglen Wine Regions are dominate features for the local area. The district has long been a producer of wool, wine grapes, timber and gold mining. The first winery in the district was established as early as 1851. Dr Lindeman puchased a local vineyard in 1872 and established Corowa winery in 1877.

In 1838, John Foord arrived with 1000 head of cattle looking for fresh grazing land. Foord established a 30 000-acre ranch known as 'Wahgunyah' on the south side of the Murray. Foord was a successful business man who ran flour mills and steamships that serviced the growing gold mining industries of Beechworth and Rutherglen. As the region grew, Foord purchased the north side of the river from the NSW government and named the community North Wahgunyah which was later renamed Corowa.

The region was originally owned by the Wiradjuri Aborigines. Corowa comes from their language where the word 'currawa', means either 'rocky river' or refers to the curra pine; once found in abundance in the area.
